Finally! Email Advice & Guidance that can be tracked

Consultant Connect is delighted to confirm that it now offers fully-tracked Email Advice & Guidance. For clinicians there is no change – a GP simply writes an email and adds attachments as usual.

One of the biggest problems with advice and guidance is that it has been, historically, difficult to track. Although it’s easy to keep track of advice handed out over Consultant Connect and e-RS, we know that there is a huge volume of email advice that is not tracked at all.

Because advice by email works, nobody wants to change it. Many email advice services have been operating successfully for more than a decade, with local hospital teams responding to GPs.

But there is now a danger that these long-standing arrangements could be threatened by a requirement to track all advice activity. As well as understanding what kind of service GPs are receiving and the impact on patients, tracking allows areas to measure themselves against targets, including NHSE’s target that there should be 12 advice requests per 100 first outpatient appointments.

Consultant Connect is delighted to confirm that it now offers fully-tracked Email Advice & Guidance. For clinicians there is no change – a GP simply writes an email and adds attachments as usual. The patient’s NHS number is put in the email title to link the advice to the patient and enable the written correspondence to be automatically uploaded into the patient record.

For hospital teams, again, there is no change. The email is received and responded to as normal. Alternatively, teams can opt to respond to advice requests on Consultant Connect’s app and desktop application. What is more, at any point either of the clinicians can place a phone call to the other in case there are questions or concerns about urgency.

As you would expect, all of the activity is tracked – numbers of cases per specialty, time to response, patient outcomes and more. It means that, for the first time, areas will be able to understand all the advice activity, speed of response and the impact on patient care. It will also ensure that all data is captured – and Consultant Connect is already reporting EROC data direct to the NHS, saving staff a large data reporting burden.
