The Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Northampton General Hospital, Carl Holland describes the District General as a DGH ‘plus’ because in addition to their 900 bed capacity they have a few specialist services such as a Cancer Centre, and a Regional Centre for Stroke, Vascular, and Renal. We asked Carl for an update on how the hospital have coped with COVID-19, how they are moving forward, and what role Consultant Connect has played in helping to keep the hospital flowing.
How Consultant Connect has helped NGH in Carl’s words:
“We’ve only had the really sick patients coming through. This has also been helped by using Consultant Connect to advise GPs accordingly rather than sending patients in.”
“We started using Consultant Connect three years ago now and we had some really good take up by the clinical teams – about 10 Specialties. Unfortunately it took a pandemic really to get the rest of them on, but now we’ve got every single specialty online with Consultant Connect (to provide primary care with Telephone Advice & Guidance). We’ve also been using the photo version (of Consultant Connect – Photo Advice & Guidance) for Dermatology images to go over to the Dermatology team. In addition GPs will now (use this technology to) send ECGs over to be interpreted by the Cardiology teams for advice.”
“We’re now using Consultant Connect for our rapid access chest pain clinics so patients that are presenting with chest pain can be seen in by a virtual clinic and advised accordingly.”
“We’ve done a lot of work with Consultant Connect to improve the flow of patients through our ED departments.”
“I think we’re in a good place and it’s been a great help to use Consultant Connect as part of our armoury in trying to keep the hospital flowing.”
