Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, NHS Tayside is delighted to announce that Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, NHS Tayside and Consultant Connect have been shortlisted for Best Acute Sector Partnership with the NHS at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2021, recognising their outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and effective collaboration with the NHS for ‘Establishing a COVID-19 Assessment and Admissions Unit’
Following the most testing period for the healthcare sector in recent history, this year’s awards reinstate the essential role of private and third sector organisations in strengthening the healthcare system. Being shortlisted for a Partnership Award has given our team the confidence in our worthwhile project and has ensured that our lifesaving project is nationally recognised, learned from and upscaled.
The judging panel comprised a diverse range of highly regarded figures across the NHS and wider healthcare sector. To be shortlisted as a finalist for these awards, despite tough competition from a pool of brilliant applications, is a mark of real achievement for Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, NHS Tayside and Consultant Connect.
The partnership has been selected based on diligence, ambition, and the positive impact that the project has had on both practitioners and patients within the health care industry.

The “Hospital within a Hospital”
“In Tayside we quickly recognised that we would need to deliver separate streams of assessment and admission for non COVID-19 and COVID-19 possible patients. This led to the rapid establishment of a dedicated COVID-19 Assessment Unit on our main hospital site and Consultant Connect were able at short notice to provide a COVID-19 Advice Line. This was a critical component of the COVID-19 stream, separate from our Emergency Department and non COVID-19 Acute Medicine Units. The Consultant Connect line enables direct referrals from GPs and regional ambulance crews and thus has enabled safe assessment of COVID-19 possible presentations and assisted in enabling the ED to continue to provide ‘traditional’ Emergency Care. This was hugely beneficial in the early COVID-19 response, when teams across healthcare were working to familiarise themselves with COVID-19 presentations. The Consultant Connect line facilitated access to expert advice and the ability to immediately listen back to calls provided a valuable training tool.”

To date, the COVID-19 Advice Line in Tayside has taken over 4,000 calls from across the region with 27% of patients (where an outcome was recorded) not coming to hospital.
Jonathan Patrick, CEO, Consultant Connect comments:
“We are very pleased to have been shortlisted for the 2020 ‘ Best Acute Sector Partnership with the NHS’ HSJ award in partnership with the amazing ED team at Ninewells Hospital, NHS Tayside.
The project was originally designed to support pathways into A&E. The speed with which it was adopted by GPs and paramedics was truly something to behold, and that was down to the brilliant work of Ron Cook and his team in the Emergency Department. When COVID-19 hit, the project was already in an excellent position to provide a COVID advice line, which went live within a few hours of commissioning. The results have been outstanding, 27% of patients have avoided an admission at the time of writing.
It shows, once again, the enormous impact that improving communications between clinicians can have on patient care. The team at Ninewells fully deserve their nomination for this award and we are proud to be their partner”
HSJ editor Alastair McLellan comments:
“We would like to congratulate Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, NHS Tayside and Consultant Connect on being nominated in the Best Acute Sector Partnership with the NHS category ahead of HSJ Partnership Awards 2021. We are looking forward to welcoming them to the ceremony in June, to join us in recognising the very best collaborations and innovations in the healthcare sector. This year’s finalists are of an outstanding calibre and all of them are exceptionally dedicated to enhancing healthcare across the UK.”
The winners will be selected following a rigorous, judging stage ahead of the HSJ Partnership Awards 2021 awards ceremony. The awards evening is expected to be attended by leaders and professionals from both the NHS and private sector as well as figures from non-clinical backgrounds to celebrate innovation and collaboration in healthcare.
