Stockport Gastroenterology Elective Care 100-day Challenge

Find out why our project in Stockport features in the NHS England’s Elective Care Transformation Programme’s “Gastroenterology Elective Care Handbook & Case Studies.”
Stockport Gastroenterology Elective Care 100-day challenge

NHS England’s Elective Care Transformation Programme tests innovations over a period of 100 days to see if they work in practice. If they do, great! If they don’t, they “fail fast”. Successful innovations that work are included in the Programme’s handbook.

We’re very pleased that our project in Stockport has been featured in the Programme’s  Gastroenterology Elective Care Handbook & Case Studies.

Stockport Gastroenterology Elective Care 100-day Challenge

The challenge
Stockport’s Gastroenterology services were experiencing increasing referrals and follow up appointments, resulting in long (18 week+) waiting times for many patients.

The solution & delivery
The team wanted to explore whether rapid telephone access for GPs to an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) specialist nurse would help to reduce unnecessary referrals. As Consultant Connect’s telephone advice & guidance service was already in use in Stockport for other specialties, the IBD nurses were simply added to this service.

Results after 100 days
In Gastroenterology, between July 2016 and March 2017, 48% of calls to the service avoided a referral with an average talk time of 5 minutes.
